Overview

This is the most popular way to reach the Sahara from Marrakech. The route crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, passes the earthen ksar of Aït Ben Haddou and follows the road of the kasbahs toward the desert.

On the second day you reach Merzouga, ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset and spend the night in a desert camp, with dinner, music and a sky full of stars. The third day starts with sunrise on the dunes before the drive back to Marrakech.

Itinerary

  1. Day1

We pick you up at your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the morning and drive south into the High Atlas. The road climbs through mountain villages to the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 metres, with viewpoints over the valleys.

On the other side of the mountains we visit Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified village of earthen houses used as a film location, and walk up its lanes to the top for wide views. After Ouarzazate and the Valley of Roses, we arrive in the Dades Valley for dinner and the night in a hotel.

After breakfast we drive to the Todra Gorge, where limestone cliffs rise on both sides of a clear stream, and you can walk through its narrowest section. We continue east through palm oases and desert towns to Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

In the late afternoon you meet your camel guide and ride into the dunes as the light turns from gold to red. At the camp you are welcomed with mint tea, then enjoy dinner and music around the fire.
